SPEAK TO US OF CHILDREN
(The Archer)

The Gibran Sculpture Series

This is a photo of a large, life size bronze sculpture of an androgenous naked man kneeling on his right knee. He is a right-handed archer and he has just fired. His right hand is drawn back, but his fingers are relaxed. His longbow seems to be made of tiny human bodies. He is clearly up high as the photo is taken from below with trees in leaf behind him. There's part of a cherry tree in full pink blossom bottom right. There is a blue sky and quite bright sunshine from left to right. It is based on a sketch by Kahlil Gibran and associated with Speak to us of Children.

Fine Art bronze 220 x 50 x 100cm (h x w x d)

This sculpture is available with or without a plinth

The first line of the Children chapter of The Prophet, reads:

‘A woman who held a babe against her bosom said,

“Speak to us of Children”.

This sculpture echoes the drawing by Gibran with a bow made of children.

His words describe the stability of the bow, with the child’s home and upbringing as the central theme of the poem, and God , the archer, encourages the parents to fire their children into the world with intent.

“You are the bows from which your children, as living arrows, are sent forth.”

Kahlil Gibran – The Prophet, 1923.

I based this sculpture on one of Gibran’s own sketches.  I made the archer life size and the bow is made up of children.

It’s a wonderful way to describe what we try to do as parents  The archer being the great master or controller or deity is God directing us to allow our children to find their own way in life, but ideally having a stable background as would be described by The Zen of Archery.

Enlargement

This sculpture is a heroic piece of great stature and would even enlarge further if so commissioned.
It forms a very strong image against any skyline.
